Random Thoughts -- By Dave Lantz, President We invite people to attend our Board meetings but they should not expect much in the way of fireworks. Homeowners are invited to express their concerns prior to the call-to-order and their comments are often allowed during the actual discussions of the more-or-less formal part of the meeting. The February meeting followed the recent pattern with appropriate reports by the responsible committee Chairs or Board Members. January is usually the month of highest expenditures and this one was no exception. In addition to our insurance bills of near $4,000 plus GVCCC dues, Tom Cooke, (with the general approval of the rest of the board members) spent most of his 2003 budget for re-graveling those common areas in greatest need. Digests of some of the committee reports appear later in this issue. Debra Schall is the owner/manager of Premier Properties, our agent for general financial and clerical work. She does similar work for other homeowner associations. She was in attendance at the February meeting and was most complimentary about the conduct of our operation. Evidently, our meetings are positively tranquil compared to some other Associations. About a year back, I chatted with a prospective buyer of an upscale free-standing house in a sub-division not far from here. He had taken the rather unusual step of attending a Board meeting before committing. He backed out on the grounds that he wanted no part of such a contentious neighborhood. We note that most of our for-sale signs recently have added "sold" after generally short times on the market. See you at the March 17 meeting, back at the usual place at Bank of America on Continental Road! Neighborhood Watch By Melodye Cooke, Chair The Annual Neighborhood Watch meeting, sponsored by the Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers will be held at the Desert Hills Social Center on Tuesday, March 4, 2003. All Block Captains, Assistants, and concerned residents of Esperanza Estates are urged to attend. Coffee and donuts are to be served at 9:00 am. Our own Judge Chuck Shipman ( EE resident) will be guest speaker. I am hoping that the evacuation plans for Green Valley will be discussed in detail. We all have many questions that need to be addressed. A special THANK YOU to all Block Captains and Assistants for all the hard work in the collection of information to help our neighbors. I am always happy to hear any comments, questions or suggestions. Please feel free to call, Melodye Cooke 399-0455. Common Area Maintenance Committee By Tom Cooke, Chair The major common area news is the completion of the first phase of the re-graveling program. So far, approximately 100 yards has been spread over the past two months in various common areas throughout the subdivision. The areas determined most in need were targeted for the initial phase, which will continue in the future as funds are available. The areas we have treated look much improved. The Board has found an excellent contractor to complete this work. In the event any resident desires private gravel work done, if you give me a call at 399-0455, I will put you in touch with him. He is reliable and reasonable. The chemical weed control program by AAA has begun, and will be continuous over the next few weeks. The few rains we have had, coupled with the warm temperatures, seem to have caused the weed seed to start germinating a bit early this year. Owners are reminded that weed control in individual yards is their responsibility. Two Palo Verde trees that were threatening one of our boundary walls were recently removed. The trees were actually on Pima County property, but as its impossible to get the County to take action on nearly any matter of this type, we removed the trees to save serious damage to the wall. A number of unsightly dirt piles, left by burrowing ground animals over the past few years, have been removed from our Esperanza corridor. Paul Rowland and one of our contractors have completed some beautification work in Mesquite Park. Our walking trail has been nicely outlined with stone, and the drainages which pass through the park have been realigned and generally "neatened" up. Our thanks to K. D. Thompson, who did a beautiful job in trimming an out-of-control Mesquite on Circulo del Norte. Walter and Eileen Stremme have donated an additional three interesting cacti to our collection in Mt. View Park. We now have over 35 separate varieties identified and on display. Occasionally we receive a request to replace dead or dying cactus in a quad yard. Unfortunately, we have no budget available for this purpose. However, approval for an owner to purchase and plant a new cactus in such an area is easy to obtain. As always, if you have or observe problems in the common areas, please give me a call at 399-0455. We will address your concerns as quickly as we can. More donations for our Ramada-Patio area: Harry & Arlene Weitz -large terra cotta planter Jack & Marion O'Donnell -stainless steel sink and faucet Harlan & Joyce Rosvold -cash donation More Good News! Paul Rowland and Lance Ewing (with some help from Vince Brow) have started constructing the storage cabinets in the Ramada area. The tile has been purchased for the counter top and when the sink is installed, this area will be much more functional for parties. (What a joy for the Hospitality Committee!) Bill Duncan and Eric Ellingson completed the buffet server cabinet ceramic tile and kick plate with assistance from Lance Ewing, Vince Brow, and Bill Milne. Bill Milne has also stuccoed the ends of the cabinet. We are hoping to have the cabinet doors fabricated and installed soon. Those that worked on the Sunset Park project are so pleased with its completion, they recently gathered to celebrate. Eric Ellingson did a recap on what had been done to turn the former dilapidated putting green into the attractive place it is now. The group enjoyed a barbecue and pot luck supper, and for dessert --a beautiful cake proclaiming "Hooray For Volunteers!" Did you know ? "I am." Is the shortest sentence in the English language. It is impossible to lick your elbow. 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321 And, according to Yogi Berra... A nickel isnt worth a dime anymore. After a waitress asked if Yogi wanted his pizza cut into four or eight slices: "Four, I dont think I can eat eight." Esperanza Estates Home Tour -- By Karen Augustine, Chair Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 30th, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM, for the Esperanza Estates Home Tour. Eight homes will be available for your review. Participating homeowners are displaying various models ranging from original design and decor to modified structures and innovative decorating concepts. These lovely homes will provide you with stimulating ideas for both interior and exterior design. You will be able to explore the homes and see how the use of color, plants, artwork, and remodeling have truly transformed and personalized these houses into very unique and inviting homes. Tickets are only $7.50 and the proceeds go to the Esperanza Volunteer Association. An informative brochure will be distributed to each person who attends. There will also be a wine and cheese party at the conclusion of the tour. A cursory scanning of the sign-in lists highlights Napa as the street sending forth the most party-goers, with Nueva 2nd; yet all streets seemed to be represented ! Although, a cloud cover yielded a view of the bright moon for only a brief time, there was no downside to enjoying the evening with committee sponsored smores around two pit fires, hot dogs from the grill, hot chocolate, as well as some delicious snacks and spirits from residents at large. The evening was topped by drawings for prizes sponsored by the Concerned Volunteers! Thanks to all for helping with clean-up. Look forward to the implementation of the committees a long-range plan for future social events: MARCH 13 -- Farewell to Snow Birds with another Nature Walk.
