Board News - By Dave Lantz, President

I missed the meeting of April 21 because of a conflict with a medical appointment. I understand things went well and the financial report indicates no problem along that line. One new item for our consideration in the near future involves planning of capital expenditures and major maintenance expense items. Bob Frost has agreed to head this program and is looking for suggestions. Homeowner member input is important, and influential, so don't hesitate to pass your observations along to him.

Common Areas Committee - By Tom Cooke, Chair

Our weed spraying program is still underway, having been considerably hampered by the recent spat of windy days. The spraying will continue as weather conditions allow, until the entire subdivision has been completed.

Our landscape caretakers use a commercial herbicide preparation on the weeds, intermixed with a harmless coloring agent which lets them know where they have sprayed. The color fades away in a day or so. The weeds generally take about 2 weeks to die, following which the caretakers remove them with rakes or other mechanical means.

The solution used is strong enough for the weeds, but harmless to cacti that may accidentally get sprayed along with them.

If any area appears to have been missed, please give me a call at the number below.

The Neighborhood Relations Committee sent a number of reminders to property owners whose yards had become unsightly due to weed growth. Most have responded promptly with cleanup work. Residents are reminded that keeping your yard neat in appearance is required by the subdivision CC& R's, and the Board has a duty to enforce these provisions. The Board is committed to keeping Esperanza Estates looking as good as we can make it. This helps everyone, as it keeps our property values, and makes our subdivision a desirable place to live. Your help and cooperation is much appreciated in this endeavor.

Ed and Joan Moreaux, of 737 Circulo Napa have donated a bench in memory of Joan's parents. It has been placed in the common area between Portillo and Mt. View Park, at a convenient place for walkers on our Trail to use for a rest. A bench is a useful and long lasting memorial, and there are places in Esperanza Estates where we could use more of them, so if you might be inclined to make a similar donation, please let me know. We place a small sign on donated benches, indicating who donated the same and in whose memory.

We are trying to gather information on where mistletoe is growing on common area trees within Esperanza Estates, so please let us know if you are aware of any. An eradication program is being planned.

Please continue to report common area ant hills to me, so they can be treated .

Although we try to accommodate all of our residents, we occasionally get maintenance requests that we are unable to handle for various reasons--usually financial. Recently we got a request to trim some very high branches from a common area tree, for the sole purpose of preventing leafy material from that tree from falling into one back yard. The tree involved posed no danger, or problem to anyone else. To accomplish this would have required the hiring of special equipment. As always, if you have or observe problems in the common areas, please give me a call at 399-0455. We will certainly help if we can.

Light Bulbs -- By Sheila Bennen

Many of you will be leaving soon for the summer, I would like to suggest that you purchase a long lasting flourescent bulb and place it in your lamp post. It would certainly help make our neighborhoods brighter and safer. Thank you

Esperanza Floor Plans and Historical Facts — By Sheila Bennen

After the home tour I was asked by a few people for the original floor plans of the subdivision. I went into the archives and found plans, elevations for the exteriors, original marketing materials, and prices. Bill Milne provided data on the design and construction and I have assembled it into a packet available for purchase. The price is $4.00 to cover the printing expenses. Any profit will be given to the Volunteers of Esperanza Estates. If you wish a copy please call Sheila Bennen at 399-0501. If there are any copies left they will be available at the Cinco de Mayo party.

Attention all Chefs, Cooks and Kitchen Staff Members!!
By Karen Augustine, Sue Thompson, and Melodye Cooke

"A Taste of Esperanza"

Yummy, Yummy! Think of all the great recipes we have collected or created over the years, from our hometowns, travels and our life in Green Valley.

We will collect your favorite recipes and publish our very own "A Taste Esperanza" cookbook. Sale proceeds will benefit the volunteers of Esperanza Estates.

Anyone interested in serving on the publication committee please meet at the pool on Thursday, May 1st, at 1:00 p.m. Bring your favorite cookbook to provide format ideas and possible cost. We plan to be published before Christmas. This will be a great gift idea.

Homeowners, Please submit recipes by E-Mail to Sue Thompson at eecookbook@aol.com, or you may choose to drop off or snail mail to Sue’s at 743 W Placita Nueva (393-7778) or to Karen Augustine’s at 785 W. Circulo Napa (625-1643) or to Melodye Cooke’s, at 840 Circulo Napa (399-0455) or Joan Zebroski (399-1053). Be sure to include your name, preparation and cook times, quantity served and the category. The recipe (recipes) should be indexed, for example, appetizers, beverages, salads and dressings, breads, muffins & cakes soups, vegetables, eggs, pastas, beef, pork, lamb, poultry, seafood & sauces.

Just think you will be a published author!!!

Plans are also in the works to have a tasting party where for a small donation you would have the opportunity to taste many of the recipes.

Watch for more details in your Periodico.

Neighborhood Watch Report By Melodye Cooke, Chair

First, a thank you for all the cards, e-mails, and kind words on the passing of my mother. I am lucky to live in a place with so many caring people.

Also, thank you to all the Block Captains, and Co-Captains that came to the annual SAV Neighborhood Watch Meeting. It was very encouraging. It was also nice to hear that Esperanza Estates is so far ahead of all of the other subdivisions in providing the information that helps the Sheriff's Department, SAV's, and medical response teams. A great job by all concerned.

Enclosed in the Periodico this month is a list of help and resource telephone numbers available to all the residents of Green Valley. You can see there is a lot of help available to us and our neighbors.

We have also published the emergency evacuation instructions on the other side of the resource numbers. Please keep this sheet as a reference for the future.

If you have had not had a chance to talk with your Neighborhood Watch Captain, and would like an "Envelope of Life" and a chance to participate in the Neighborhood Watch program, please call me (Melodye Cooke) 399-0455.

Esperanza Estates Home Tour -- By Karen Augustine

Ideas and friendships were gained from the 1st Annual Home Tour. This event also netted $700.00 to benefit our Volunteers of Esperanza Estates. By all reports, this event was a success and already anticipated for next year.

The committee thanks Norma Stanley for the delightfully decorated cacti pots given each homeowner. They were appreciated by our very generous and willing homeowners. This event would not have been possible without the participation of homeowners Jim & Marti Teale, Judy Badgley, Bill & Dagmar Duncan, Ben & Mona Sheffield, Horace Hicks, Shura Wallin and Rich Ramirez, and Ezella Struble.

Many thinks to Tom & Melodye Cooke for their generous donation of framed prints by DeGrazia. The lucky winners of the drawing for these prints were Dot Voessler, Jan Rowland and Mary Buckholz.

My appreciation to all of the people who consistently pitched in, came up with great ideas, and made this event so much fun: Dian O’Brien, Bev Brow, Mona Sheffield, Tess Ewing, Sue Thompson, Joan White, Mary Zindrick, Melodye Cooke, Sheila Bennen, Kay Miller, Rod Pearson, Lois Blacker, Norma Stanley, Ken Miller, Tom Cooke, Dorothy Paul, Jean Rexer and Joan Zebroski.

See you all next year on tour!!!

Comments, compliments, suggestions. All feedback is welcome. Please address your comments to Karen Augustine, 785 W Circulo Napa.

Are you willing to share your home next year? (name, address, and phone number)

Facilities/Long Range Planning -- By Robert Frost, Chair

A list of Capital Expenditure projects has been prepared. The Board has requested input from the association to modify this list and suggest priorities. Please e-mail ArizFrost@aol.com or phone (399-9003) me any input you may have. The list will then be budgeted and presented at the Annual Meeting in January.

QUAD DRIVE REPAIR

-- There are two quad drive locations that exhibit significant cracking. One is south of Holgado and the other is at the north east corner of the property where the Placita Nueva drainage is routed onto Esperanza.

POOL RAMADA REPAIR

-- There is damage to the underside north east corner of the roof. A section of the sheeting will have to be replaced and new foam and coating applied.

REGRAVELING

-- Gravel needs replacing in the common areas throughout the property.

REPAINTING COMMON WALLS

-- Common walls along the south and west have patches of missing paint. These walls require repair and repainting.

RIP-RAP ALONG WASH

-- There are two areas where sand is washing onto the street. The wash between Excelso and Circulo Del Sur has some rip-rap that can be refurbished. The wash north of Regalo dumps large amounts of sand onto Portillo during moderate rains. This is a large area that will require an estimated $10,000 expenditure.

POOL SOLAR HEATING

-- $9,000 is budgeted for gas at the pool. In addition, Scottie reported at the last board meeting, that there have been some complaints about the pool being too cold. Solar heating should reduce the gas expense and may also allow more comfortable temperatures.

CONTINGENCY FUND

-- A rule of thumb contingency amount is about 1-year’s income. At the present time, the contingency fund is about ? that amount. Adding needed Capital Expenditures to the budget will further reduce that fund if the association does not obtain additional funds from the homeowners.

Hospitality Committee -- By Phyllis Johnson-Frost, Chair

The Committee is planning for the next party open to all neighbors at the Pool Ramada on May 5 celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Here's a bit of intertwined U.S. & Mexican history to set the stage. The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from Spain, the 15th of September, l810. But it took 11 years of turmoil before the first Spanish soldiers were forced to leave Mexico. So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers--against all odds--smashed the French army of Napoleon III of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico on May 5, l862. Voila, the Mexicans had won a great victory that kept Napoleon III from supplying our own confederate rebels for another year, allowing the United States to build the greatest army the world had ever seen. This grand army smashed the Confederates just 14 months after the battle of Puebla, essentially ending the Civil War! See the flyer (below) for details.

Let’s Get Together for Cinco de Mayo

Periodico Survey

The principal way the Esperanza Estates Board has of communicating with the subdivision residents is through the Periodico. It has been suggested that its expansion could make it a considerably more useful publication. Therefore, we would like to survey our residents to see what, if any, changes or additions they would like to see. Please take a minute to complete the following and return it to:

Periodico Survey
840 Circulo Napa
Green Valley, AZ 85614

Check any of the following you would like to see added to the Periodico:

• Classified-type ads (for Esperanza Estates residents who have something to sell, rent, or wish to buy, advertise a yard sale, provide a service, etc)

• Commercial ads (which would be sold, with proceeds used to defray expenses in connection with publication of the Periodico)

• Announcements

• Recipes

• Summaries of Board meetings

• Humor photos

• Other (insert your idea here)

• I don't wish any changes in the Periodico
