Message - By Max Perry Isn't it nice to feel a little nip in the air!! I want to welcome Tom Cooke back from his week long visit to University Medical Center. Tom is recuperating at home and we're all very grateful to have him back with us. Welcome home Tom. This month's Board meeting was very productive and I want to recap a couple of the more significant actions taken. The Board authorized me to sign a contract with the architectural firm Merry Carnell Schlecht for the design of our new pool ramada. This is a project that will benefit the entire Association year round. It will, in essence, become an open air clubhouse and will be used extensively, I firmly believe. We are very hopeful, and it is our plan, that the project can be accomplished without any specific assessment or dues increase. The budget process has begun and we will know more about that in a month or so. If you haven't had the chance to see the concept drawings, drop by the pool and have a look. Being there while you examine the drawings gives you a very good idea of the scope of the project. For many months we have been hearing justifiable concerns about the condition of the spa. The spa, and it's plumbing, are over 25 years old and, frankly, not doing the job any longer. This Board has shown great dedication to providing the membership with the best facilities we can. Rest assured we will address the spa. Gary Chelseth and Ben Sheffield are collecting estimates and studying our options. We'll have a plan by next month. Three important committees will be working this month. Ben Sheffield and Sheila Bennen are heading the Budget committee and Tom Cooke assures me the Parking committee will be able to accomplish its work by the end of November. Steve Brown will be organizing the Election committee this month as well. We will have three board seats up for election this year. If you are interested in running, please contact Steve. The Budget and Parking committee meetings are open to any member and I will announce meeting times and places in the Monday Morning Memo. If you're not receiving the Memo and would like to have it delivered weekly by email, drop me a note at Max@esperanzaestates.com. Finally, I want to thank all the members who attend our Board meetings and say how much I appreciate the spirit of cooperation we hear from the floor. We all live here together and are all motivated by the same goal.....keeping Esperanza Estates the best neighborhood in Green Valley. Recreational Facilities – By Bruce Liljegren, Chair Winter pool hours are 7:00am to 7:00pm daily and go into effect Nov. 1st. Children's hours remain 11:00am to 1:00pm and 4:00pm to 6:00pm all year long. The new pool railings should be installed soon and a major leak in the pump room has been repaired. Fellow board member Gary Chelseth is getting numbers together on what it will cost to get our spa(or a new one) fully operational with functional jets that will move the flow of water inside the spa. Note: the report in the Periodico was last month's report. Hospitality – By Lavonne Corral, Co-Chair One hundred ten people have made reservations
for the Western Night to be held on October
29. Many hours of planning have gone into
this event. The Hospitality Committee has
made plans to try something new for the
next month. On Tuesday, November 8, Sam
Barnard and the committee will be grilling
and serving hamburgers or veggie burgers
with all the fixings. The Happy Hospitality
team member will be taking your order and
serving you at your table. No lines to
stand in. Just good eats and another opportunity
to meet your neighbors and socialize. Depending
upon your response and input, Hamburger
Night in Esperanza Estates could become
a regular event on the second Tuesday of
every month. See you there! Mission Statement To extend the hand of friendship in our Esperanza Estates Community that offers and opportunity for all to gather in a congenial atmosphere with the intention of providing Fund, Food, and Fellowship. Neighborhood Relations– By Norma Stanley, Chair A phone call was received from a concerned
resident regarding the painting of a new
portion of fence noticable from her residence.
I was informed by Ken Miller that the new
owners would be arriving soon and would
have the house painted as well as the new
portion of fence. Hazardous Waste Pick-up – By Sheila Bennen Don’t forget
the hazardous waste pick-up on November
12, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Gather up
all your old paint, solvents, and medicine
and bring them over to the Presbyterian
Church. Esperanza Park Sign – By Sheila Bennen Many Thanks to Herb Graffweg for making a replacement sign for Esperanza Park. Herb is responsible for all of the signs in the parks and signs marking our trails. Advertisements – By Sheila Bennen We would encourage
each of you to ask any "trade person" that
you feel does an excellent job to place
an ad in the Periodico. We would like
our homeowners to have a list of reliable
people to call. We would like a copy
ready ad. Please call Sheila Bennen at
399-0501 for more information. New / Former Owners – By Sheila Bennen New: Jack Brewer New Phone Number – By Sheila Bennen Jim & Geri Lindberg An Article from Earl Whigham, Original
Developer of Esperanza Estates I was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi
in a proverbial shack with no indoor plumbing.
My father was a good general handyman and
traveled quite a bit. I was seven when
father moved us to New Orleans where I
first attended school. I was put in the
first grade at seven years old, three months
later into the 3rd grade, and the following
year into the 5th grade. I entered high
school at eleven, finished all public schools
at fifteen, and was into my third year
at Tulane U when Pearl Harbor was attacked
and my military career started. We were married for 60 years before she died of a massive stroke in 2003. We had one son who is married and has three children. I am now a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather. The reason we came to Tucson was for my wife’s health. She had arthritis in her left hip. In New Orleans, because of the high humidity, she was in constant pain. Our doctor said to move to a dry place like Tucson, Arizona. In 1961 we moved here, where I was in real estate until 1971. I became annoyed with the house designs that had little or no imagination so I got into house construction where I created the new Pueblo Villas Style. It looked like it belonged more in Arizona than anything else I saw. People seemed to like this concept, so I built several subdivisions, of which Green Valley Esperanza Estates was the largest. I really enjoyed living in Green Valley, but Kitty’s health worsened and we moved to Tucson to be closer to doctors. I finally eased off construction to spend more time taking care of Kitty. In 1989 and again in 1998 she had triple by-pass operations. She could not drive anymore and when she rode in a car she became sick so we stayed home. I am very proud of my designs and subdivisions and I believe I gave all who purchased one of these homes a very good bargain. The above article was
written and sent to Bill Milne as an
answer to many Esperanza Estates home-owner
requests for more background on our developer.
Earl was pleased to do this and says "Thanks
for the memories."
